Teledermatology in 2025, Faster Skin Care When You Need It Most This Winter

Skin Health with AccessGP

By Dr Zamiel Hussain, Founder and Lead GP

As winter begins, we see a sharp rise in skin problems in both adults and children. Colder air, heating indoors, dry environments, stress, antibiotics, holidays and winter infections all contribute to flare ups of existing skin conditions. Eczema becomes more inflamed, acne worsens, fungal infections spread quickly in damp environments and many people develop new rashes they have never experienced before.

Accessing timely dermatology support can be difficult at this time of year. Waiting lists are long and many conditions require early assessment before they worsen. This is why teledermatology has become such an important part of modern care, offering fast, safe and specialist level guidance online.

This article explains how teledermatology works, what we can treat safely online and why winter is often the best time to seek support.

What is teledermatology?

Teledermatology is a clinical service that allows patients to receive dermatology assessment remotely through secure photo uploads, video consultations or digital triage. It has been used across the NHS and private sector for several years and is supported by strong evidence for diagnostic accuracy when carried out by trained clinicians.

Teledermatology works particularly well for:

  • acne
  • eczema and dermatitis
  • rosacea
  • fungal infections
  • viral rashes
  • psoriasis
  • perioral dermatitis
  • scalp conditions
  • mild to moderate inflammatory skin disease

It can also be used as an initial step for mole or lesion review. If anything requires in person dermoscopy or biopsy, we provide clear guidance and appropriate referral.

Why winter is the peak season for skin problems

1. Dry indoor air

Central heating removes moisture from the skin, increasing irritation, flaking and inflammation.

2. Cold outdoor temperatures

Sudden temperature changes weaken the skin barrier, triggering eczema flares and rosacea episodes.

3. Stress at the end of the year

Stress hormones can worsen acne, psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis.

4. More infections circulating

Viral rashes, fungal infections and bacterial skin conditions become more common in winter.

5. Holidays, travel and disrupted routines

Different climates, new products, swimming pools, sunscreen and dietary changes all contribute to winter flare ups.

Many of these conditions respond quickly to the right treatment, but worsen when left without early intervention. Teledermatology improves access to timely care when symptoms start.

At AccessGP, the process is triaged and securely arranged swiftly with expertise in a few clicks.

How AccessGP’s teledermatology service works

Our service combines GP leadership with specialist dermatology expertise, allowing fast diagnosis and personalised plans.

Step 1) Secure photo upload

Patients submit clear photos of the affected area before the consultation. This improves diagnostic accuracy.

Step 2) Online dermatology consultation

Our dermatology GP reviews the history, symptoms, triggers, previous treatments and medical background in detail. Video consultation completes and supplements the assessment.

Step 3) Diagnosis and personalised plan

We provide a clear diagnosis, a step by step treatment plan and specific guidance on skincare routines.

Step 4) Prescription if needed

We can prescribe topical and systemic treatments safely, including:

  • retinoids
  • topical antibiotics
  • antifungals
  • steroid preparations
  • azelaic acid
  • anti inflammatory treatments
  • oral antibiotics when indicated
  • ongoing acne management plans

Step 5) Follow up and continuity

Skin conditions often require adjustment. We provide ongoing follow up through ongoing AccessGP input where needed.

Viral rashes

Including hand foot and mouth, viral exanthems and shingles triage.

Skin infections

Various skin infections which require treatment.

Skin Health Consultation

A popular assessment with our skin expert. Prevent issues and understand your skin health with an expert led consultation.

“Around one in four people experience a skin problem that affects daily life each year, and winter flare ups account for a significant proportion of new dermatology consultations.”

When online dermatology is not suitable

Teledermatology is not appropriate if there are:

  • rapidly changing moles
  • bleeding or ulcerated lesions
  • severe infection
  • systemic unwellness
  • suspected melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma
  • widespread blistering conditions

In these situations we advise urgent escalation for a face to face assessment.
