Private Ultrasound Scan
GP-Led Assessment and Fast Private Referral
If you are considering a private ultrasound scan, AccessGP offers GP appointments to assess your symptoms and arrange appropriate ultrasound imaging with trusted UK providers where clinically indicated.
Ultrasound scans are commonly used as a first-line investigation and do not involve radiation. This service is suitable for patients seeking faster access to imaging, reassurance, or clarity before further investigations.
What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of structures inside the body.
Ultrasound is commonly used to assess:
- Abdominal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and bladder
- Pelvic organs including the uterus and ovaries
- Testicles and scrotal structures
- Soft tissue lumps or swellings
- Thyroid and neck structures
- Blood flow in certain vessels
Ultrasound does not use radiation and is generally considered very safe.
When might an ultrasound scan be appropriate?
An ultrasound scan may be discussed when symptoms suggest a condition that can be assessed using real-time imaging.
Common reasons a GP may recommend an ultrasound include:
- Persistent or unexplained abdominal pain
- Pelvic pain, bloating, or menstrual concerns
- Testicular pain, swelling, or lumps
- Soft tissue lumps or swellings
- Suspected gallstones or kidney stones
- Urinary symptoms or bladder concerns
- Thyroid lumps or neck swelling
- Suspected hernias
A GP assessment helps ensure the scan requested is appropriate and targeted to your symptoms.
Why a GP assessment is helpful before an ultrasound scan
A GP consultation helps to:
- Clarify whether ultrasound is the most appropriate first test
- Decide which body area should be scanned
- Provide relevant clinical details to the sonographer
- Avoid unnecessary or poorly targeted imaging
- Ensure results are interpreted in the correct clinical context
While ultrasound is low risk, clinical assessment improves accuracy and usefulness of results.
