What Will I Need?
We keep the process simple, but there are a few essentials your GP will need to assess your health safely and guide your treatment plan.

Accurate home scales
You will need to record your weight at home before the consultation and during follow up.
A video consultation
A GP appointment is required to assess suitability, discuss risks and form a personalised plan.
Monthly GP reviews are required before any ongoing prescriptions. Follow up appointments allow your GP to assess progress, review side effects, update your weight and blood results, and ensure treatment remains safe.
Summary Care Record
You will be asked to provide a recently dated summary care record to your AccessGP record. This helps us safely assess your initial and ongoing care.
Recent blood tests
Your GP will need up to date results for liver function, kidney function, lipids, glucose and in some cases thyroid markers.
If you do not have recent results, AccessGP can arrange blood tests for you to support your weight loss treatment and health journey.
Agreement to share information
By pursuing weight management with AccessGP, you agree that we may share a clinical summary with your NHS GP for continuity of care.

What is weight loss treatment?
Weight loss treatment refers to a safe, structured medical approach to supporting healthy weight change. It focuses on understanding your overall health, lifestyle, and goals, and identifying options that may help you lose weight safely under GP guidance.
A full medical assessment is always required before any treatment or support plan can be recommended.

- Treatment options depend on your medical history and overall health
- Lifestyle, nutrition and activity changes form the foundation of safe weight loss
- Medical support may be considered after a full GP assessment
- Ongoing monitoring is recommended to ensure safety
- Not all treatment options are suitable for everyone
- Your GP will advise on the most appropriate and safest pathway for you
A GP consultation is required before any medical treatment can be considered, and suitability varies from person to person.

Why Use a GP Led Pathway?
Medical weight management involves more than issuing a prescription. A GP led approach ensures full medical assessment, investigation where needed, personalised plans and structured monitoring for safe progress.

A GP led pathway allows a doctor to assess your wider health, identify risks such as gallbladder disease or high triglycerides, and make sure the treatment is actually safe for you.
Benefits include:
- Form an effective and holistic plan
- Screening for contraindications and risks
- Identifying symptoms that need investigation before treatment
- Personalised dosing and follow up
- Review of side effects and early concerns
- Access to NHS GP communication for continuity
- Consideration of alternative treatments
This level of clinical oversight is essential for such medication, which requires careful monitoring and personalised guidance.
A pharmacy led service cannot provide the same depth of medical assessment, diagnosis or continuity of care.
“A GP led pathway ensures you receive a full medical assessment, appropriate investigations, blood test review and personalised monitoring.
Pharmacy only services are not designed to diagnose conditions, evaluate complex risks or provide ongoing medical supervision, which is essential when considering such treatments.”

Do you guarantee a prescription?
No. A prescription is only offered if you meet clinical criteria and it is safe for you. Your GP will complete a full assessment before making any decisions.
Do I need blood tests first?
Yes. Recent blood tests are required to check liver function, kidney function, glucose and lipid levels. If you do not have recent results, AccessGP can arrange these for you.
Do I need monthly follow up appointments?
Yes. Monthly GP reviews are required before further prescriptions can be issued. These appointments allow your doctor to monitor side effects, check your progress and ensure that treatment remains safe and appropriate.
Is this safe alongside my NHS GP?
Yes. By joining the weight management pathway, you agree that AccessGP may share a clinical summary with your NHS GP for continuity of care.
Are weight loss treatment suitable for everyone?
No. Patients with certain conditions, such as pancreatitis history, uncontrolled endocrine disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding or unstable medical concerns, may not be eligible. Your GP will advise during the consultation.
How quickly will I lose weight?
Results vary between individuals. Your GP will focus on sustainable and medically safe progress rather than rapid changes.
Can I stop treatment at any time?
Yes. You can stop at any point and your GP can help create a safe plan if you decide to discontinue.
Do I need to inject the medication myself?
Yes. Weight loss treatment is a once weekly self administered injection. Your GP will explain how it works and provide guidance on safe use.
Can AccessGP Plus members use their membership for weight management reviews?
Yes. If you are an AccessGP Plus member, your monthly GP reviews for ongoing monitoring can be carried out through your membership appointments. Medication costs are separate and a full clinical assessment is still required before any prescription can be offered. Weight management assessments and follow up appointments remain subject to clinical safety and eligibility checks.
What should I do in a medical emergency?
