This service is suitable for patients facing long NHS waiting times, seeking faster answers, or needing clarity before progressing with private imaging.
What is an MRI scan?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI, is an advanced imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of soft tissues, joints, nerves, and internal structures.
MRI scans are commonly used to assess:
- Muscles, ligaments, and tendons
- The spine and spinal cord
- The brain and nervous system
- Joints such as knees, hips, and shoulders
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation.
When might an MRI scan be appropriate?
An MRI scan may be considered when symptoms suggest a condition that cannot be adequately assessed with examination alone or simpler imaging.
Common reasons a GP may discuss MRI include:
- Persistent joint pain, swelling, or instability
- Suspected ligament, tendon, or cartilage injury
- Ongoing back or neck pain with neurological symptoms such as numbness or weakness
- Shoulder or hip pain not responding to conservative treatment
- Persistent headaches or neurological symptoms requiring further assessment
- Sports or soft tissue injuries
An MRI scan is not always the correct first investigation. A GP assessment helps ensure imaging is appropriate, targeted, and clinically justified.
Why a GP assessment matters before an MRI
A GP consultation is important to:
- Assess whether imaging is clinically indicated
- Identify red flag symptoms that may require urgent care
- Decide which body area should be scanned
- Avoid unnecessary or inappropriate imaging
- Ensure findings are interpreted in the correct clinical context
Imaging without proper clinical assessment can lead to incidental findings that may cause unnecessary anxiety or further tests.

Frequently asked questions about private MRI scans
Do I need a GP referral for a private MRI scan?
In most cases, yes. UK imaging providers usually require a GP or specialist referral before performing an MRI scan. A GP assessment ensures the scan is appropriate and targeted to the correct body area.
Can I book an MRI scan directly without seeing a GP?
Some providers advertise self-referral MRI scans, but this is not always clinically appropriate. Without a GP assessment, there is a risk of scanning the wrong area or identifying incidental findings that may cause unnecessary concern. A GP referral helps ensure the right scan is arranged first time.
How quickly can I get a private MRI scan?
Once a referral is issued, many private imaging providers can offer appointments within a few days, sometimes sooner depending on location and urgency. Availability varies by provider and scan type.
How much does a private MRI scan cost?
Private MRI scan prices vary depending on the body area, scan protocol, and provider. Many UK private MRI scans typically range from £250 to £700 or more. AccessGP patients may be eligible for up to 10% off standard self-pay prices with selected trusted providers.
Will my private MRI results be explained to me?
The imaging provider will usually issue a written radiology report. AccessGP provide a follow-up GP appointment to discuss the results, what they mean, and the next steps if needed.
Will I get images?
We’ll receive the official radiology report. Many providers can share images on request.
Is an MRI scan safe?
MRI scans do not use ionising radiation and are generally very safe. However, they are not suitable for everyone, particularly people with certain implants or metal devices. This will be checked during your GP consultation and by the imaging provider.
Do you prescribe medicines or arrange physiotherapy?
Yes – where clinically appropriate, we can prescribe treatments or refer for onward assessments (e.g. virtual physiotherapy) depending on the result of the scan.
